Opportunities in North Wales Community Dental Service

North Wales Community Dental Service is a large service employing just over 200 staff. Ten of our dentists are on one or more of the GDC Specialist lists with three additional dentists having Masters Degrees. We encourage staff development and currently have four Dentists on Masters Courses and two Dentists have gained DwSI status.


The service is committed to continuing education with most clinical staff trained in Inhalation Sedation. This service is offered by dentists and therapists at most of our 27 sites. IV Sedation services are available at six sites across North Wales and the Community Dental Service operates general anaesthetic services at the four District General Hospitals. A latex allergy clinic operates at Rhyl. We are also supported by a visiting Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry from Alder Hey.


The service offers Dental Nurse Training for dental nurses leading to the NEBDN diploma examination and post certification/diploma courses in Special Care Dentistry, Conscious Sedation and Dental Health Education. We currently have three places for DCT(1)s and have appointed to and Specialist Registrar post in Special Care Dentistry. All final year dental students from Cardiff Dental School attend a compulsory 2-week module on the Outreach Student Training Scheme at Wrexham Dental Centre.


Recent service developments include an Intermediate Tier (Dental Alveolar Surgery) Service and the provision of support to the Head & Neck Cancer MDT. Direct Access training for Therapists is provided and we are committed to expanding our skill mix models. A number of preventive programmes operate: Designed to Smile (an all-Wales Programme targeting children in the most deprived areas of Wales); Gwên am Byth (Care Home Programme); Mouth Care in Hospitals (1000 Lives) and Child and Adult Learning Disability Programmes.
