Consultant Medical Oncologist

We are looking for candidates with special interests in gynaecological and colorectal, however will make every effort to accommodate the subspecialty interests of the successful applicants. Within the standard job plan there will be a flexible PA which can be used to undertake a variety of work of the candidates choosing (subject to approval on appointment).  Examples of what this time could be used for include Quality Improvement Projects, Educational Roles, Strategic or Development Work.

 

Oncology is a regional service, based on the three main North Wales hospitals of Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, Ysbyty Glan Clwyd in Bodelwyddan and Wrexham Maelor Hospital. This post will be based at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor. 

 

The North Wales Cancer Centre has a 20 bed in patient ward and day-case chemotherapy unit with facilities for 24 patients simultaneously.  There is a radiotherapy department which includes 4 operational Linear Accelerators, using advanced radiation treatment and verification techniques. IMRT and IGRT are used routinely in several tumour subsites. SBRT is under development.

 

The Alaw Unit has an 18 bed in-patient ward and day-case chemotherapy unit with facilities for 18 patients simultaneously. In addition it provides Level 2b haematology service with an active peripheral blood stem cell harvesting and transplant service. 

 

The Oncology team consist of 8 Clinical Oncologist and 6 Medical Oncologists, 5 Specialist Registrars, 2 Associate Specialists, 6 Speciality Doctors and 5 Junior Doctors.   The Division includes the speciality of Haematology and has a close working relation with Palliative Medicine.  We have an active Research Department recruiting to the national portfolio of radiotherapy and systemic therapy trials.  The Health Board has a long history of close collaboration with both Bangor University and Cardiff medical School with ample opportunities to develop interest in academic work, education and leadership roles.
